It was hard to keep up with repairs putting three boys through parochial school and with both Samuel and Pamela being laid off and finding new jobs. At one point, they did not have a working furnace. When her grandchildren visited, they knew to grab a “couch blanket” from the box in the corner if they were going to be spending time in the cold living room.
However, Pamela was persistent and called various agencies every year checking on any possible home improvement programs. Her persistence paid off. Now they have a new roof, hot water heater, furnace, and windows. The exterior of their home was so transformed that people looking for the old house drove right past.
Diagnosed with adult onset asthma, Pamela would wake up coughing every night. With the new furnace, she sleeps through the night. Her husband is also sleeping better because she used to wake him with her coughing.
Pamela has been encouraging family, friends, and neighbors to apply for the programs that helped make her home healthier, safer, and warmer. “Seeing our home is making them believers!”
These improvements resulted in a 19% reduction in fuel usage and will keep 23.8 tons of GHG emissions out of our atmosphere.

Pamela’s mother and one of their sons live with them so there are three generations under the roof of the big house in NE Rochester.'
The 2,000 sq. foot home, built in 1910, was hard to keep warm. They have always paid their utility bill, even when other needed expenses suffered. Pamela said, “We paid. We had to. We had three kids at home.”
